How it works

The tool implements three formulas, each derived from clinical research using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) as the reference standard. The Boer formula estimates LBM for males as 0.407 x weight(kg) + 0.267 x height(cm) - 19.2, and for females as 0.252 x weight(kg) + 0.473 x height(cm) - 48.3. This formula was developed specifically for clinical nutrition assessment and is the ESPEN-recommended method. The James formula estimates LBM for males as 1.1 x weight(kg) - 128 x (weight(kg) / height(cm))^2, and for females as 1.07 x weight(kg) - 148 x (weight(kg) / height(cm))^2. This formula was derived from a large epidemiological dataset and is widely used in body composition research. The Hume formula uses LBM = 0.32810 x weight(kg) + 0.33929 x height(cm) - 29.5336 for males and 0.29569 x weight(kg) + 0.41813 x height(cm) - 43.2933 for females. The body fat percentage is then derived as (total weight - LBM) / total weight x 100. Each formula gives a slightly different LBM estimate due to differences in the study populations and statistical methods used. The Boer formula is generally preferred for adults of normal BMI, while the James formula may be more appropriate for overweight individuals.
