What is this tool?

Our free Pomodoro timer implements the famous time-management technique: focus for a work interval (25 minutes by default), take a short break (5 minutes), and repeat. The timer switches between work and break automatically, with a gentle sound and color change so you always know the current phase. You can customize both durations to match your own rhythm. It runs entirely in your browser — no account, no distractions, just you and your task.

How it works

The timer runs as a small state machine with two phases: work and break. When a work interval ends, a chime plays and the break phase starts automatically; when the break ends, work restarts. The countdown uses the actual elapsed time (via Date.now()) rather than simple decrements, so it stays accurate. The phase label and colors update on every switch, and the cycle continues until you pause or reset.

How to use

  1. Set your work and break durations (defaults 25 and 5 minutes).
  2. Click Start to begin the first work interval.
  3. When it ends, the timer automatically switches to break.
  4. Pause or Reset anytime; the cycle keeps alternating.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the standard Pomodoro durations?

The classic settings are 25 minutes of work and 5 minutes of break, with a longer break (15-30 minutes) after every four cycles. You can adjust both here.

Does it switch automatically?

Yes. When a work interval finishes, the break starts automatically and vice versa. A short sound marks each switch.

Can I change the durations?

Yes, both the work and break minutes are fully customizable before you start.

Does the timer keep running in the background?

It continues while the page is open. Some browsers throttle background tabs, so keep the tab visible for the most reliable chime.

Tips & Advice

Close unrelated tabs and silence notifications during work intervals to protect your focus. After four work intervals, take a longer 15-30 minute break — pause the cycle and restart with a longer break duration. If 25 minutes feels too long at first, start with 15-minute intervals and work your way up.
