How it works

The tool calculates the day of year by computing the difference between the input date and January 1st of the same year, then adding 1 (since January 1st is day 1). JavaScript's Date object handles month boundaries and leap year rules automatically, so February 29th is correctly included in leap years. For leap year detection, the tool applies the standard Gregorian rule: a year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except for century years which must be divisible by 400. This means 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not. Days remaining in the year is calculated by subtracting the day of year from the total days in that year (365 or 366). The percentage of year completed is simply the day of year divided by total days, multiplied by 100.
